SUMBERURIP COMMUNITY TRADITION OF WELCOMING GUESTS
Simplicity of life in an agrarian society
The courtyard is an open vessel to receive visitors. For Javanese people, especially those living in rural areas, they welcome anyone regardless of social status. In general, it contains meaning. This means that Javanese people generally have the meaning that anyone can enter regardless of social status. The Sumber Urip community welcomes guests by spreading mats under a tree on the front porch of their house. The host sits on the same mat as the visitor, which is a reflection of simplicity and strengthens closeness to nature.
When visitors are already sitting on the mat, some warm drinks are served. Starting from spice drinks (ginger, cardamom, vanilla, and nutmeg) and coffee are mandatory drinks because coffee is part of the Sumberurip community tradition. Snacks made from tales beneng flour, as a companion to enjoy the warm drinks. All are garden products. The dishes served are based on local produce. From the dishes served, visitors can find out what produce is available in a place.
After a few minutes of interacting and adapting to strengthen social relationships while enjoying warm drinks, the host promises traditional dishes including rice, tempeh, tofu, fried fish or chicken/grilled chicken, lodeh vegetables or urap-urap. The diversity of dishes is a symbol of the diversity of society, the diversity of agricultural products, and also a symbol of the prosperity of the local village.
This tradition is often done during family visits, thanksgiving/feast events. Family members are definitely involved and, often the host is assisted by neighbors to prepare dishes with great hospitality. The involvement of neighbors to help prepare the place or dishes is a real manifestation of a strong social institution, namely mutual cooperation.
This is a reflection of the values of guyup rukun and tepo seliro always respecting visitors, Like Javanese culture, visitors are special guests. In Islam, it is taught that it is obligatory to make guests happy with the best possible hospitality and there is no difference in class or social status, even looking at their religion. This is the Islamic value that has become the culture of Javanese society.
In Javanese philosophy, welcoming visitors as a form of respect is a reflection of the principle of andhap asor (humble) nerimo ing pandum (accepting with sincerity), also reflects openness and honesty. The shady courtyard is a symbol of harmony between nature and the uniqueness of Javanese agrarian society.
