Beyond the Landscape, Meeting Bapak Barji in Ngaduman Village

2026-07-15 Ngaduman, history

In Ngaduman Village, slow travel begins by getting to know the people who quietly shape the place every day. A cup of coffee becomes the starting point for conversations about the land, the changing seasons, patience, and the hopes that grow alongside village life. By taking time to listen, travellers discover not only the coffee itself, but also the values and stories that give the village its character.

Not every memorable journey begins with a famous destination.
Sometimes, it begins with a person.
Nestled on the slopes of Mount Merbabu, Ngaduman Village welcomes visitors with cool mountain air, vegetable fields stretching across the hillsides, and homes that follow the natural contours of the landscape. Yet its beauty extends far beyond the scenery. Behind every garden path and cultivated field are people who quietly dedicate themselves to caring for the future of their village.

One of them is Bapak Barji.
With Sabato Kaliwuan, your journey goes beyond the landscape. You are invited to step into everyday village life, listen to local stories, and discover how hope is cultivated through work carried out with patience and quiet dedication. It is an experience shaped by the spirit of slow travel , taking time to be fully present rather than rushing from one attraction to the next.

Several years ago, Bapak Barji began planting Arabica coffee among the vegetables growing on his farm. It was never a decision driven by quick returns. He understood that coffee demands patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep learning.
He devoted his time to studying seedling cultivation, understanding the character of the mountain soil, observing changing weather patterns, and learning how to grow Arabica coffee at an elevation of approximately 1,700 metres above sea level.

For Bapak Barji, coffee is more than a new crop.
It is hope.
Hope that Ngaduman Village can build a more diverse future, one where families are not solely dependent on vegetable farming, but can create additional livelihoods from the same land while preserving the identity of their mountain farming community.
Over time, that belief began to spread. More villagers started planting coffee alongside their vegetables. Together, they have been improving coffee quality, caring for the land, and creating opportunities for travellers to experience village life more closely.

This is where a journey with Sabato Kaliwuan finds its true meaning.
Rather than simply visiting a coffee farm or enjoying a freshly brewed cup of Arabica beside the traditional (pawon) kitchen, you are invited to meet the people behind every cup, those who spend years caring for the land, waiting for each harvest season, and believing that the future is built through small, consistent acts carried out every day.

As you sit together around the pawon with a freshly brewed cup of coffee, you may hear stories about increasingly unpredictable seasons, the realities of farming on mountain slopes, family traditions that continue despite changing times, or a simple hope that the next generation will always have a reason to return home.
The mountain air may be the first thing you notice. But the conversations are what remain with you long after the journey ends. Because, in the end, every meaningful journey begins with someone willing to share their story.
And behind every cup of coffee are the people who patiently nurture the land and the hope that grows with it.
